A former hotel in Carlsbad, California will be converted to 98 housing units, a “relatively quick and easy way” to boost housing and make use of the neglected property.
As Phil Diehl reports in the San Diego Union-Tribune, “The three-story, Studio 6 hotel is on 3.21 acres in an industrial park at the southeast corner of Avenida Encinas and Cannon Road, just west of an Interstate 5 onramp.” Converting it to housing avoids the barriers faced by developers hoping to build new projects in residential neighborhoods and will include 15 income-restricted units.
The Carlsbad city council unanimously approved the project. According to Mayor Keith Blackburn, the only downside is the loss of between $150,000 and $200,000 in transient occupancy tax, some of which will be made up by the increased property value.
