THE Valencia regional government in Spain has announced an €839m modernisation and expansion plan for the Metrovalencia and Tram d’Alacant networks. The investment forms part of Valencia Government Railways’ (FGV) 2026-2030 strategic plan and is described as the largest in the company’s history.
The plan sets out six key action points:
- a €275m package covering infrastructure renewal, including the renovation of tunnels and level crossings, updated signalling and communications for light rail lines and surface sections of the metro, upgraded electrical systems and expanded maintenance workshops
- a €50m package to complete work on restoring parts of the network damaged by severe flooding in the October 2024 storm, including track, offices and workshops at València Sud
- a €185m package for new rolling stock, comprising 22 new LRVs from Stadler Rail Valencia, 16 for Metrovalencia and six for Tram d’Alacant. Additional LRVs will be procured from 2029 to meet future capacity requirements
- a €90m package focusing on stations, passenger facilities and accessibility, including the refurbishment of underground stations on Metrovalencia lines 1 and 2, a new passenger information system, and work to provide step-free platforms
- a package, the cost of which has yet to be disclosed, to improve service frequency, with shorter routes on Metrovalencia lines 1, 3 and 9 to improve punctuality and reliability. A base service frequency of 12 minutes will be introduced on most of the surface network, and
- a €240m package to cover network development. For Metrovalencia, this includes completing a pedestrian tunnel linking Alacant and Xàtiva stations, track-doubling on Line 3, building lines 11 and 12 to connect the city centre with the seafront, Malilla and La Fe Hospital. In Alacant, new projects include a central interchange station, track doubling of the Hospital Vila - Benidorm and L’Albir - Altea sections, electrification of the Benidorm - Garganes line, and a new stop at Jesús Pobre–Pedreguer.
When the works are complete, Metrovalencia is expected to increase its service capacity by 15% and Tram d’Alacant by 25%.
