TRANSPORT for New South Wales (TfNSW) has awarded Siemens Mobility a contract to install ETCS Level 2 on Sydney’s T1 North Shore Line. The 24km double track section between Hornsby and Townhall is one of Sydney’s busiest rail corridors.
The Tranche 2 Trackside 2A contract, the value of which has not been disclosed, also includes deployment of Trainguard Radio Block Centre, Westrace Mk2 interlockings and enhanced cybersecurity measures. The project will cover eight sections, enabling phased design, testing, and commissioning while minimising disruption to train services.

Siemens won a contract in 2020 for the Tranche 1 rollout of a new Traffic Management System (TMS) and introduction of ETCS Level 2 signalling from Sutherland to Cronulla, due to go live in the near future.
"This contract represents a milestone in modernising Australia’s rail network,” says Raphaelle Guerineau, CEO of Siemens Australia and New Zealand. “Our progressive delivery method with a strong focus on customer collaboration and local signalling expertise ensures that we implement reliable, innovative signalling solutions with minimal impact on Sydney Trains operations."
The project is part of the New South Wales government’s Digital Systems Programme to replace current signalling and train control technology with modern, internationally proven, intelligent systems, helping to improve reliability, increase capacity and enhance passenger experience on Sydney’s railways.
