When Nico Hulkenberg got onto the podium for the first time at this year’s British Grand Prix, the F1 driver was presented with a very unique trophy to mark his third-place finish.
Along with McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who finished 1-2 respectively, Hulkenberg was presented with the first-ever Formula 1 trophy made entirely from LEGO elements. For his third-place result, Hulkenberg received a white LEGO trophy that measured just over 16 inches tall, with red and blue detailing inspired by the iconic Royal Automobile Club (RAC) trophy first presented in 1905.
The Silverstone LEGO trophies came just months after the the construction toy brand took over the Miami Grand Prix driver’s parade, with the F1 stars behind the wheel of 10 fully drivable, LEGO big build cars. LEGO says the impressive builds required 26 specialists working 22,000 combined hours to create the life-size cars, that looked exactly like the real ones, complete with Pirelli racing tires and sponsored logos. Each LEGO car was built from a staggering 400,000 LEGO bricks and weighed in at nearly 1500 kg.

The Silverstone trophies and Miami GP cars were just the latest ways the LEGO Group has embedded itself into the Formula 1 experience, since they established their multi-year partnership back in September of 2024. Officials from both sides say the goal has been to make F1 more accessible to families and younger audiences, while promoting creativity, innovation and engineering globally. LEGO’s presence in the households and races have been more apparent than ever, with the release of the best-selling LEGO Formula 1 cars, and the brand’s attendance in 21 races around the world through activations like LEGO Fan Zones and LEGO Pit Shops for fans to further engage on- and off-track.

For Hulkenberg, who achieved the first podium finish of his career at the British Grand Prix, getting to lift a LEGO trophy added to the once-in-a-lifetime moment. “Silverstone was super special and [held] incredible memories,” the driver tells Rolling Stone. “The race was obviously very uncertain and not the usual conditions, but we just mustered that day and that race and [it was] truly amazing for us to come away with it,” he says. “And it was really fitting also that I achieved the podium when the LEGO trophies were handed out,” Hulkenberg adds.
The German driver says he’s been a long-time LEGO fan, dating back to growing up in Emmerich, on the north bank of the Rhine. As a young boy, Hulkenberg says he was already was a car fanatic, and would spend hours putting LEGO cars together. It now translates to his life as a father, with his four-year-old daughter being massively into cars as well. “It’s good [because] it pushes and promotes creativity and a lot of things [through] learning by playing,” he says.
