While generally, as long as one hasn’t fallen into the very amusing world of specialty coffee, we tend to simply accept a cup without really caring about the characteristics of what we’ll be drinking. Yet, there are many factors that influence the cup: the origin of the beans, the coffee variety, the drying method, the roast profile, the extraction method, and many others. Much like wine, understanding what one tastes is essential to appreciate specialty coffee and to develop interest in the product — to understand how to choose one’s coffee and how to prepare it properly, while potentially reducing the number of steps needed to approach, based on these characteristics, the ideal cup.
