I listened to the most beautiful rendition of Hungarian composer Franz Liszt’s Liebestraum today, otherwise known as Love Dream. The piece was performed by the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, and featured a full string ensemble behind the pianist.
In listening to this piece, I was beyond moved. There’s something special in listening to other’s renditions of pieces you know how to play yourself. Not only do you hear the other ways it can be interpreted, but you also feel each note as it’s played in your own fingertips by proxy. You feel the stretch of the hands to reach the notes as if you were reaching for it yourself.
I have only ever heard this piece performed as a solo piano piece, and had no idea so much emotion and beauty could be drawn out of a piece that’s already drenched in the love that it sings of. Specifically after the first cadenza, about the 2-minute mark, there is a resounding silence that engulfs the space, if only for a moment. Then, as the next section starts, the strings slowly melt back in, like those ghostly memories that always linger in the back of the mind.
As I reached the end, I realized that there wasn’t anyone to really share this revelation of beautiful music with. Not that others wouldn’t appreciate it as much as I do, but no one with the same classical ear to hear the intricacies, nor someone who I would ignore that fact enough to bother them about it. Instead I will gush about my endless admiration for the romantic classical era and the lasting impact here!
