Staying active is important for health and wellbeing. For people who are blind or vision impaired, tracking exercise can sometimes feel challenging. Thankfully, Android devices offer features and apps that make it easier to monitor your activity safely and independently.
The Google Fit app is built into most Android devices and can track daily steps, walking or running distance, active minutes, and calories burned. Google Fit works well with TalkBack, the built-in screen reader, so you can hear all your activity details. You can also set goals and track progress over time.
For guided workouts, many Android-compatible fitness apps provide audio instructions. Apps like Strava, MapMyWalk, or Nike Run Club let you follow walking, running, or cycling routines while hearing information about pace, distance, and duration. TalkBack announces menus, buttons, and progress so you can navigate the app independently.
If you use a smartwatch with your Android device, such as a Wear OS watch, you can track heart rate, steps, and workouts more precisely. The watch communicates with Google Fit and other apps, providing a complete picture of your exercise routine.
Voice commands can also help. Using Google Assistant, you can start workouts, check progress, or ask about your daily steps without touching your phone. For example, say “Hey Google, start a 30-minute walk” or “Hey Google, how many steps have I done today?” Hands-free control makes it easy to stay active while keeping your phone or watch accessible.
Tracking exercise with your Android device helps you stay motivated, monitor goals, and maintain independence. It can be especially helpful for staying active safely in Ireland, whether you are walking outdoors, cycling, or following an indoor workout.
