The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open-standard communication protocol designed to provide AI models with a structured, secure way to interact with external tools and datasets. Traditionally, an agent’s knowledge is confined to its training data; MCP breaks this silo by defining a standard for "servers" that expose specific capabilities, or "tools", to a client (the LLM).
