South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn (D) on Sunday said he doesn’t think the U.S. is ready for a woman president.
“If you look at the history, we demonstrated that we are not ready, these are incredible women who have run, Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris,” Clyburn told NBC’s Kristen Welker on “Meet The Press.”
“Just because it doesn’t seem that we are ready doesn’t mean we should stop the pursuit. We may be in a dark moment as it relates to women serving as president, but we may be in that moment just before dawn when a woman will serve and in order for that to happen they have got to run,” he added.

Clyburn’s remarks echo similar comments from former first lady Michelle Obama last month.
“As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready,” Obama said at an event promoting her book “The Look.” “That’s why I’m like, don’t even look at me about running, because you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman. You are not.”
In May, former President Biden expressed a similar perspective after former Vice President Harris’s 2024 loss.
“They went the sexist route,” Biden said on ABC’s “The View”. “A woman couldn’t lead the country and a woman of mixed race.”
Earlier this year, Harris hinted that she may seek the Democratic nomination in 2028.
“I am not done,” Harris said, adding that she could “possibly” be president one day.
