Zara Larsson has been producing major pop hits since the late 2000s—so it’s surprising to hear last night was her first time attending the Grammys. The Swedish singer attended music’s biggest night as a buzzy nominee: She was nominated for best dance pop recording for her smash hit album, Midnight Sun (you know the song, it’s all over the radio and TikTok right now).

“[It was a] dream come true! I was so happy, and still am,” Larsson tells Vogue. It was a night of many firsts for the singer: Not only was she nominated for best dance pop recording, but she also performed at the pre-show ceremony. “It was a beautiful room filled with beautiful people, many friends and colleagues,” Larsson says. “I was extremely nervous leading up to this moment, but I felt so calm and relaxed. I will probably feel the same on my wedding day.”

Naturally, Larsson found outfit inspiration for the night in the summery, Y2K fashion mood of “Midnight Sun.” Styled by Caterina Ospina, the star wore a sunny couture look from Kevin Germanier, with additional jewels by Swarovski. The glittery yellow two-piece—consisting of an asymmetric bra top and skirt—was finished with a dramatic waist piece that mimicked the rays of the sun. It’s the perfect look to sing about skinny-dipping with your heart out. Makeup artist Sophia Sinot—who has been creating all of Larsson’s vivid, sparkling looks on tour—used Maybelline New York’s collection of products to give the singer her golden, sun-kissed glam.
“I was inspired by the sun,” says Larsson of her striking look. “The dress was handcrafted by a team of 12 beaders and four sewing technicians, highlighting the level of couture-level craftsmanship involved. All beads used on the dress were upcycled: They were carefully cleaned, sorted, and separated by type before being hand-applied, giving new life to existing materials.”

While most of America is experiencing below-freezing temperatures and piles of snow, Larsson says summer isn’t over yet—and she’s finding inspiration in the light of this moment. “I’m just doing what I do, which is to have fun and to sing,” she says. “Success is a symptom of creating, and that’s the way it should be. The focus should always be on the creativity and the inspiration around music. Whatever happens after that is just the cherry on top.”
Does that mean her tropical, beachy closet will continue through the rest of winter? Yes, despite Punxsutawney Phil declaring six more weeks of winter this morning. She’s working on the deluxe version of the album, and dropped a Muni Long remix of “Midnight Sun” that’s currently on repeat across the Vogue office.
“This era lasts as long as the music allows me to,” she says. “I want everything to be driven by the songs. But in terms of fashion and style, I wish to see my style naturally evolve and develop with time and the next story I wanna tell. I feel that what I’m doing right now is so me, meaning I won’t do a full 180 and turn into something completely different.”
