A woman on her way to the University of California San Francisco Medical Center on Monday gave birth inside a Waymo autonomous vehicle.
The support staff for the car noticed from its Waymo operations hub unusual activity during the ride and called the passenger and 911 for extra support. The robotaxi reached the San Francisco hospital before first responders could, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
“We can confirm this is true, and the mother and baby came to our hospital,” hospital spokeswoman Jess Berthold told The San Francisco Standard.
The mother’s name has not been publicized.

A Waymo spokesperson told the Chronicle that “we’re proud to be a trusted ride for moments big and small, serving riders from just seconds old to many years young. We wish the new family all the best, and we look forward to safely getting them where they’re going through many of life’s events.”
The autonomous vehicle was removed from service afterward to be cleaned.
The birth was not the first inside a Waymo. The company, a subsidiary of Google parent company Alphabet, told the Standard that a woman in Phoenix had her baby inside one of the company’s vehicles.
