Thank you all for the continued support since we started out in June 2024.
Support for gotwebd is now live in production. With this, repositories can be served from our hosting service to the web. Serving static web sites directly from repositories is also possible. See https://gameoftrees.org/gotsys.conf.5.html#WEB_SERVER_CONFIGURATION for how this can be configured.
We now finally have the minimum set of features implemented which one would expect from a minimal Git hosting service. As next steps, we are planning support for SHA256 Git object identifiers, and setting up a mailing list server for use by projects on our hosting service.

As of now, we still depend on your contributions on opencollective to keep the lights on. The amount of Git hosting subscriptions which have been booked do not yet cover the entirety of our hosting bills. We will need more paying subscribers to cover our hosting costs before we can start using your contributions on opencollective to pay for software development as intended.
The size of our core server setup provides a lot of room for growth. Which of course makes hosting bills more expensive than they would be if we had planned our capacity only for today’s small subscriber base. We still hope that leaving our current setup as it is will turn out to be worth it eventually.
In an attempt to attract more subscribers we have lowered prices for the year 2026. Our cheapest tier went down from 10€/month to 5€/month.
Our communication about what subscribers are paying for has been a bit problematic. A common misconception seems to be that each subscription corresponds to one user account, as a user account would appear on popular other Git hosting services such as Github and Codeberg. Most people are currently booking an entire VM just for themselves. While in fact, each subscription provides a VM which can be used to host an entire software project with up to (in theory) 1000 committers and as many repositories as will fit on the disk.
To attract more subscribers we need to do more advocacy. The more people become aware of our existence, the higher the chances of new subscriptions will be. If you could help spread the word about us that would be very much appreciated. We would appreciate blog posts, mentioning us in conversations, and linking to our web site from suitable places. And getting a few businesses to subscribe to our professional tiers would make a huge difference.
Thanks again. We couldn’t be doing this without you!
