Decoding the exercises
The three exercises shown in the video include a combination of leg lifts, raises, and crunches. All you have to do is lie flat, lift your legs toward the ceiling, and slowly lower them back down without touching the floor to engage lower abs and target your obliques. For crunches, you lie flat and keep your back and legs touching the ground, lift your upper half to a seating position, lower yourself and repeat.
Pawan Behal, fitness consultant at Shahkot, Punjab, shared that these exercises help reduce stress on the spine. Strong muscles provide better support, decreasing the load on your spine. They help correct postural imbalances, distribute weight evenly across your body, and prevent strain on specific areas. A strong core provides a solid foundation for your spine, reducing the risk of injury. “Flexible muscles allow for greater freedom of movement and less tension in your back,” he told indianexpress.com.

Why are core workouts important?
Anamika Lalwani, Founder of Lit Fit Dance & Fitness Studio, added that the **core **is the powerhouse of the body, and maintaining its strength is crucial for overall health and functionality. “It is the foundation of all movement. From sitting and standing to bending and lifting, a strong core supports your body in everything. It’s not just about achieving defined abs; it’s about stability, balance, and spine protection. Core strength helps prevent injuries, improves posture, and enhances performance in workouts and everyday activities,” she explained.

Previously, **Shilps Shetty **had shared a video acing deep squats with dumbbells to strengthen her core and improve mobility. A deep squat is a foundational lower-body exercise that focuses on full-range hip, knee, and ankle flexion.
“It not only strengthens the quadriceps, glutes, hips, hamstrings, and ankle stabilisers, but also enhances overall lower-body mobility. Deep squats support knee health, improve posture, increase functional strength, and can help reduce lower-back discomfort by opening the hips and lengthening the spine,” Prerna Khetrapal, Founder, Kaizen Wellness, Goa, had told indianexpress.com.

Whenever you are doing a core workout, those with severe knee, hip, or lower back pain should consult a doctor or a trained professional before attempting these exercises. “Movement should be slow and controlled, keeping the spine neutral, heels grounded, and knees aligned with the toes. Range of motion can be reduced in case of previous injuries or tightness until the body develops adequate strength and mobility,” Khetrapal added.
